"DMX is currently on life support and in a coma. There are multiple people with inaccurate information about his well-being and it is not helpful and productive," Rifkind told NBC News Tuesday night. "Tomorrow he will undergo further tests on his brain function and his family will determine what's best from there."
The 50-year-old star, real name Earl Simmons, is said to be in a vegetative state on life support after suffering three heart attacks during a drug overdose last Friday, according to reports.
DMX has spoken openly about his addiction to crack cocaine, which began when he was 14 years old after he smoked a marijuana cigarette laced with the drug. He also claims to have bipolar disorder. On February 10, 2016, DMX was found unresponsive in a Ramada Inn parking lot in Yonkers.
“Prolonged use of crack cocaine can have severe long-term consequences,” Lukasz Junger, assistant medical director at alcohol and drug addiction treatment center Mountainside, tells WebMD Connect to Care. “Organ damage is a major concern, as crack cocaine use over time can cause both lung and kidney function to deteriorate.”
